Power Electronics

In this research line, we develop advanced solutions in power electronics, covering everything from design and modeling to implementation and experimental validation in the laboratory. The focus is on high-efficiency energy conversion systems, with applications in renewable energy, electric mobility, and industrial systems.

This work is centered on the development of power converters and control strategies capable of operating under real-world conditions, while addressing key aspects such as efficiency, power density, modularity, and robustness.

Advanced Control for Electric Drives

Control strategies are developed for coupled electrical systems, including power converters and electric machines. One example is optimal switching sequence MPC applied to a three-port converter, used for the speed control of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM) with hybrid energy storage.

Test Bench for Inertial System Emulation (Flywheel)

A test bench has been developed for the active emulation of systems with inertia, enabling the validation of control strategies under controlled dynamic conditions.

The system integrates:

  • Electrically machines mechanically coupled
  • Power converters
  • A real-time simulation platform (OPAL-RT)
  • Emulation of flywheel-based energy storage systems

This type of infrastructure makes it possible to evaluate the dynamic behavior of the system, as well as the interaction between control, power conversion, and energy storage.

Electric Vehicles

This facility supports the development and validation of energy conversion technologies for electric mobility applications, with emphasis on fast charging systems and modular power architectures. It provides an experimental environment for the design, implementation, and testing of efficient, scalable, and adaptable solutions for different charging and energy storage configurations.

The infrastructure is intended for the evaluation of converter performance, charging strategies, and system integration under representative operating conditions relevant to electric vehicle applications.
